The Downey City Council initiated the Keep Downey Beautiful Program in 1978. The Program was structured by Citizens’ Health and Environmental Sanitation Committee which recognized a growing need in the community to discourage litter, graffiti, and unsightly properties. In 1981 the Keep Downey Beautiful Committee was certified by the nationally acclaimed Keep America Beautiful. As a part of the Public Works Department, the office of Keep Downey Beautiful is dedicated to educating the public on a variety of issues: beautification, graffiti, litter and recycling – all aimed at improving the quality of life in Downey. Keep Downey Beautiful is a volunteer operation that is coordinated by a full time City employee. The committee functions as a volunteer steering committee. It is composed of concerned citizens, business leaders, educators, and individuals from all lifestyles. Join the enthusiasm shared by the hundreds of volunteers that have made the Keep Downey Beautiful program a success. The Keep Downey Beautiful Committee meets the second Monday of each month. 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Downey City Hall, 11111 Brookshire Avenue, and Engineering Conference Room – Second Floor.
